Marlins' Ramirez Has Shoulder Surgery

Miami, FL .Florida Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez underwent left shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum Wednesday, and expects to be fully recovered in time for spring training.
Ramirez played through soreness for the final month of the season despite expecting to have surgery, and still finished with a .332 batting average and a club-record 125 runs scored.
The 23-year old native of the Dominican Republic has never spent any period of time on the disabled list in his two-year career, although he has experienced issues with the same shoulder in the past. In May 2006, Ramirez mildly dislocated the shoulder while swinging, and then aggravated the injury during Winter League play in the Dominican.
The 2006 National League Rookie of the Year, Ramirez was one home run shy in 2007 of becoming only the third player in major league history to total 30 homers and 50 stolen bases in a season.

Another Gene Linked To Breast Cancer
NEW YORK - Researchers say they've discovered a major reason why women who inherit a mutated version of the gene BRCA1 run a high risk of breast cancer - and that finding might aid the search for new treatments.
A second gene, called PTEN, plays a key role, scientists said in a study released Sunday.
Scientists have long known that BRCA1 normally repairs damage to other genes. So if it's crippled by mutations, the unrepaired damage could be expected to lead to cancer. But the specifics of that story have been murky.
The new study fingers PTEN, which normally acts as a brake on cancer. The researchers found evidence that in breast cancers associated with a BRCA1 mutation, PTEN is often broken and doesn't get repaired. That sets off a chemical cascade that leads to malignancy.
This is "probably a major way" that defects in BRCA1 can produce breast cancer, said Dr. Ramon Parsons of Columbia University, who reports the work with colleagues on the Web site of Nature Genetics.
PTEN was discovered about 10 years ago, and scientists know a lot about it and the chemical pathway that gets activated when PTEN is disabled, he said. Drug companies have been testing drugs in animals that seek to treat tumors by interrupting that cascade, and they've gotten some encouraging results, he said.
Breast cancers associated with the BRCA1 gene are generally aggressive and have a poor prognosis. BRCA1 and its cousin BRCA2 account for less than 15 percent of all breast cancers.

Dog Set On Fire; Owner Pleads Guilty

DETROIT - A dog owner has plead guilty to what Humane Society employees said was the worst case of torture they have ever seen.
Investigators said John Delmar Fladger, 44, of Detroit, poured gasoline over his dog and set him on fire last month.
One witness said the owner first tried to burn the dog inside a convenience store.

"Yes, inside the store. He was pouring gas," said Evon Yusef, who witnessed the attack. "There was gas all over the place. Customers were scared. They were backing away from him."
Another witness told investigators from the Michigan Humane Society that the owner later seemed to be showing off in front of a group of children.
"He was walking down the street, spilling gas at the dog. He was trying to light the dog at the same time he was walking," the witness said.
Natatia Nix of the Michigan Humane Society called it one of the worst cases she has ever been a part of.
"The (Humane Society) staff sees everything that comes in. We see the hit-by-a-car dogs, the gunshot dogs, the neglected dogs -- every type of abuse," Nix said. "But this ... We were just looking around the room. We were in there with the dog -- each of us were crying."
Nix said the dog, a shepherd mixture, was so badly burned that treatments did not help, so the animal had to be euthanized.
During the investigation, the owner originally denied hurting the dog, but pleaded guilty last week to animal torture and the killing of an animal.
The owner is scheduled to be sentenced later this month. He faces up to four years in prison.

Evel Knievel To Be Buried Monday

BUTTE, Mont. Evel Knievel is to be buried in his hometown of Butte on Monday, with a service that's expected to attract thousands.
The legendary stuntman died Nov. 30 in Clearwater, Fla. He was 69 and had been in frail health for years.
Knievel's hometown honored him with fireworks Sunday as his body was brought back. There's to be a public viewing Monday, followed by a service at the Butte Civic Center, the largest indoor space in town. The Rev. Robert Schuller of California's Crystal Cathedral will preside.
Knievel's funeral procession will wind its way through Butte along a six-mile loop known as Evel Knievel Way. The graveside service will be private.
During his daredevil days, Knievel was known for spectacular and sometimes near-fatal motorcycle stunts, which led him to conclude it's better to try and fail than not try at all.
Every year, Butte holds an Evel Knievel Days festival that draws tens of thousands of visitors.

Fed Expected To Cut Interest Rates Again

WASHINGTON -- Policymakers at the Federal Reserve are expected to cut a key interest rate at their meeting Tuesday.
The rate is now 4.5 percent, and analysts are looking for another drop of one-quarter of a percentage point.
There's some speculation that the central bank could chop it by a half point.
The Fed has cut rates twice this year, but the credit crunch and housing stress have snowballed, leading Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke to signal that one more cut might be needed.
Banks, financial companies and other investors have lost billions from loans made to people with spotty credit or from putting money into securities backed by those subprime mortgages.
Investors in the United States and abroad have grown more wary of buying new debt, thereby making the credit crunch worse.
All that has added to the turmoil on Wall Street.

Broward School 'Super' Job Comes With Perks

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. After serving as Broward County's interim school superintendent since November of last year, James Notter has been asked to take on the role on a full-time basis.
On Tuesday, the Broward School board voted unanimously to appoint Notter to the role of Broward Superintendent of Schools.
Local 10 reported that Notter will be paid $290,000 a year through 2010. He will also receive a $900 a month car allowance and a monthly expense account of $500. The contract also includes a $250,000 life insurance policy and a fully wired Internet network at his home.

Teen Birth Rate Rises After 14 Years
4,265,996 Babies Born In 2006

The nation's teen birth rate has risen for the first time in 14 years, according to a new government report.
The teen birth rate had been dropping since 1991. The decline had slowed in recent years, but government statisticians said Wednesday it jumped 3 percent from 2005 to 2006, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report.
Overall, 4,265,996 babies were born in the U.S. in 2006.
The increase in births by teen mothers was based on the 15 to 19 age group, which accounted for about 99 percent of the more than 440,000 births to teens in 2006.
The rate rose to 41.9 live births per 1,000 females in that age group, up from 40.5 in 2005.
The all-time peak, in 1991, was 61.8 births per 1,000. At its lowest point, the rate had dropped 34 percent.
"It took us by surprise," said Stephanie Ventura of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a co-author of the report.
The birth data for 2006 also showed births to unmarried mothers hit a new record high, as part of a trend that started in 2002.
Also, the overall birth rate has climbed to its highest level since 1971, with the rate per woman climbing for women in their 20s, 30s and 40s.

Cemetery Allows Owners To Be Buried With Pets

AKRON, Ohio -- For many people, their pets are their lives. Now, when some owners depart from this life they can be laid to rest with their pet.

Cleveland television station WEWS reported that a historic Akron cemetery is allowing pet owners and their animal friends to be buried together.
The Glendale Cemetery in Akron will allow pet owners to cremate their pets to be buried in their lots.
Missy Jordan is like a mortician for animals. She sells pet urns. She said that, at Hummel Funeral Homes, they cremate about 200 animals a month.
"We have done some lizards in the past, rabbits, things like that," Jordan said.
Whether your pet has feathers, scales or fur, or if it slithers or climbs, Jordan has prepared pets for funerals -- even rats.
"I'm not a rodent fan, but a lot of people love them and have them as pets, and they cremate them and keep them with them forever," Jordan said.
If an owner is interested in having a spot for their pet at Glendale Cemetery, the cost is $350. The pet can have a flat marker, and there are thousands of plots available.

Shoppers More Often Turning To Credit Cards

WASHINGTON -- Consumer borrowing rose in October at a slightly faster rate than the previous month as shoppers continued to depend on their credit cards to finance purchases.
The Federal Reserve reported Friday that consumer credit increased at an annual rate of 2.3 percent in October, faster than the 1.6 percent growth rate for September.
The gain reflected an acceleration in the growth of credit card debt which offset a second straight month of declines in the category of debt that includes auto loans.

Revolving credit, which includes credit card debt, increased at a rate of 8.3 percent in October following a gain of 6 percent in September and an even stronger pace of 10.6 percent in August.
Credit card debt has been surging in recent months as consumers have started borrowing more heavily on their credit cards now that home refinancings have slowed. That slowdown has reflected tighter bank lending conditions as a serious slump in housing has sent home prices falling and increased the level of mortgage defaults.
"Consumers' ability and willingness to extract equity from their homes is waning and thus they will have to increasingly turn to other forms of credit, namely credit cards," said Ryan Sweet, an economist at Moody's Economy.com. "Elevated gasoline prices will also provide additional support to revolving credit as consumers typically use credit cards at the pump."
For October, auto loans actually shrank at an annual rate of 1.3 percent following a 1.1 percent rate of decline in September. This reflected the serious difficulties facing domestic automakers, who have seen demand stagnate in the face of surging gasoline prices.
Before the back-to-back declines in auto loans in the past two months, loans in this area had only experienced one monthly decline in the past seven years.
Overall consumer credit rose by $4.7 billion to a record $2.49 trillion in October. The increase was slightly ahead of the $3.2 billion rise in September but below the $6 billion advance that economists had expected.

Officials have arrested a fake dentist for impersonating a deceased dentist.
Hollywood Police arrested 64-year-old Gustavo Quezada for impersonating Dr. Primitivo Garcia, who died in 2004. Quezada practiced under the false name for several years at 2450 Hollywood Boulevard, Suite 400.Quezada is charged with practicing dental hygiene without a license and using another person's identification.

Tropical Storm Watch Issued

Miami- A tropical storm watch was issued this afternoon by the National Hurricane Center for portions of southeast Florida.
The agency warns strong, gusty winds swirling between Tropical Storm Noel and a high-pressure system over the East Coast will continue buffeting Florida through tomorrow as Noel was expected to skirt the state's coast.
At 5 p.m. Eastern, Noel's center was about 240 miles southeast of Miami. The storm was nearly stationary, but was expected to turn to the north away from Florida later in the day and speed away from the U.S. over the Bahamas. It had top sustained winds near 50 miles per hour, up from 40 miles per hour earlier in the day.

Police involved shooting sends suspect to hospital

DAVIE, Fla. - Officials are investigating a police involved shooting after a man confronts them with a gun.
Authorities were called out to 1010 Meadowood Terrace in Davie after calls were made saying a man is making suicide threats. When police arrived on the scene, a suspect confronted them with a gun and shots were fired.
The suspect was transported by air rescue to Broward General Medical Center and his condition is unknown.
Officials say the officers were not injured during the shooting. "Both officers are fine and the investigation is ongoing," said Lieutenant Wayne Boulier of the Davie Police Department.

The ugly girl

There was an insignificant country girl called Cristina. She just moves to a Big City “California”. She was very unattractive and ugly. She starts high school the next day she moved. When she enters school no one notice she passes by because of her indifferent look. She used big brown glasses, long dark skirt and big blouses. Her hair was short and very curly. She seams to be Serious and conservative. She was as far from been cool as she could possibly be. Basically she did not care what anyone thinks about her. I mean she doesn’t even wear make-up and her clothes are not even in style like most teenagers clothes are. Cristina was very simple, in other words not fancy at all, she would not care about fashion and the way she dress to go to school. She would rather read than being stuck in some click in her school.

All the boys and girl in school were very rude with Cristina. All the insults make her feel really bad and sad. They name calling “the ugly stocker”, only because she wasn’t attractive at all. Every day she cries in her way home. The next day she decides to be strong and don’t feel bad of all that verbal abuse. But almost went she thought everything was doing well, the most beautiful boy in school passed by and insult her. The problem was not the insult; basically she did not pay attention to that, the thing was she like the boy. At that very moment she felt heartbreaking and painful.

At the end of school year, the prom night was coming. She wanted to go but she feels so ugly and she did not know what to wear. Prom night came and one of her sisters convinces her to do a make over. She accepts, and she went to the beauty salon. When she finally got out of the beauty salon, she looked gorgeous. Her hair was shiny, and brilliant. That night she wears a long red dress that mashed with her white skin. She was not using her big glasses; her blue eyes were very bright. She looked like a princess in a fairy tale. When she entered in the Solon where the Prom was been celebrated everyone look at her and the people start talking about how beautiful was her, and asking who was she?

The boy her liked ask her to dance and she accept. She was very tense and nervous.
Minutes later they began talking and he ask her who was she, She said “I am the ugly girl in the back of the classroom”, “That insignificant ugly stocked, that no one never payed attention to her” That just me. He was very surprise, and he said sorry to her.

In conclusion, Life's far too short to care about silly stuff. Basically at the end just isn’t important, we have to be happy with our self because at the end you are the only one that really matters. Just remember when someone is trying to say bad things to you and about you, it's more than likely because they aren’t that secure about themselves, so just laugh and humor them.

Health Insurance For Pets

Some pet owners now paying thousands of dollars for medical procedures for their animals, a number of companies have sprung up offering health insurance plans for pets.

ConsumerReports found that when you add up the premiums, co-payments, unreimbursedcosts and exclusions, pet insurance is not a good deal. The magazine's managing Editor Kim Kleman concludes that the policies are almost never worth the price. Infact, she says pet insurance is such a bad deal that Consumer Reports recommends that if you're worried about having enough money to keep your pet healthy, start a savings account. That way, you'll have the money if you need it. And if you don't need it, it goes back in your pocket.
So far, less than one percent of the nearly 60 (m) million U-S households with pets have opted for the insurance. But the largest insurer, a company called Veterinary Pet Insurance, says its business grew by 45 percent last year.

Mostly the warning about a product being hot after heating may cause serious problems. For example, there was a famous case; a woman successfully sued McDonald’s because she was burned when she spilled a cup of coffee in her legs. Also, relatives are trying to sued the companies for damage cause by there products cause by the lost of a family member. In my opinion all this things happens because the people don’t take time to informed or warned then self about the dangers.

My Life Story:

Since I was a little girl I was a very disciplined. However, I have to say I hated school and that was my problem. When I was in elementary, I used to grab my mother’s skirt because I did not want to go inside the classroom only because I didn’t like school and my teacher. I remember my teacher was so sweet with me, but the problem was that I didn’t want to be apart from my mother; to me she was like my savior at that time. Later on I started to feel better in school and as consequence I stopped crying and I was actually feeling good about it. I think all kids pass through the same situation, of course some more than others.

Then, I came to the United States and started middle school. I was nervous of relocating to a new country starting a new school, meeting new people and teachers. I was fearful of the language, because I did not speak English, at that time I only spoke Spanish, obviously my native country is Cuba and they only speak Spanish. Soon after I improved my language skills and was feeling better in middle school, the professors were awesome. I used to have E.S.O.L classes, the classes are bilingual. It’s a program for Spanish speakers where they teach students English while teaching the specific subject. When I was in 8th grade I was already a very excellent student, I liked school and believe it or not I became a gifted student.

Subsequently, I went to high school. Only by saying the word “high school” made feel scare, I was going to confront a new challenge in my life, this was serious stuff. Anything I would do in high school would affect my future in school. Even tough it was serious it was also the best time of my life; high school was historical for me. I remember when I was in 9th grade I was so simple, in other words not fancy at all, I would not care about fashion and the way I dress to go to school. But when we as girls get older, we start worrying about dressing nice to look good for the boys we like. Throughout whole high school I grew mentally and physically. The year I remember the most is “Senior Year”. It was a very special year because it was our last year together growing with the same friends seeing the same faces and the idea of being separated from this easy and fun world was really hard for me to accept. Prom Night was beautiful, I believe I looked gorgeous, I felt like a princess in a fairy tale with the exception of not having a prince. However, after prom I actually had my first boyfriend and my first kiss. Also I went to many field trips, like Sea world, the Zoo, and the best one of all “Grad Night” in Orlando; I don’t have words to express the emotions and memories I had with my friends in the park ourselves having fun with no parents, no teachers just us. High School was a great experience for me, the teachers were great .In my senior year I got to know everyone at school even the people who clean the school. Everyone in school became like part of my family. After good and bad times I finally graduated.

I am currently here in Miami Dade College, my major is psychology. I’m trying to do my best in every class. Speaking of class, I start a reading class on Monday and is only once a week, I met my professor yesterday she was really nice, I like her confidence and her attitude in class, I noticed she is very demanding and challenging and I like that, it forces me to be more responsible and dedicated and that’s the way I learn. My purpose in this class is to pass it with a good grade and learn the most I can to be successful in life. I have to say it; college is very different from high school and middle school. The difference is that you learn to be more responsible because you are actually taking classes for your future career and you do not want to get bad grades on something that is so important for you. Also, I had to learn to be more independent and take care of my own things, because in college teachers are not behind you and telling you what to do, if you want to accomplish and succeed in class you need to be interested in learning and do your best in your own.


In conclusion, I am growing up as a better human being thanks to the challenges I passed throughout my whole life. I gained more experienced and knowledge to face any circumstance in my life path. I am just a girl preparing myself to have a better future and be able to maintain a family with no problems. As any woman and/or person I want to achieve my goals and dreams and make my mother proud of me. I hope to be able to have the right tools in my hands to construct a future full of love, economic stability, happiness and knowledge.
